Heron Island is a coral cay in the southern part of the Great Barrier Reef near the Tropic Of Capricorn. It offers a unique honeymoon experience where you can immerse yourself in the beauty of nature. The island is about 800 metres long and 300 metres at its widest, with only one resort, Voyages, which accommodates a maximum of around 200 guests. This means you have the opportunity to explore away from crowds.

Heron Island is a major nesting site for Green and Loggerhead Sea Turtles and the nesting season occurs from January to March. If you visit during this time you will have the opportunity to view the fresh hatchlings scurrying to the sea. The island is covered in rich forests which provide habitat for thousands of nesting seabirds. The best time to see the thousands of Black Noddy birds is in the breeding season between October and April, and bird season is at its peak from January to March, when the turtles are also there.

Heron Island is surrounded by Heron Reef which is a wonderful place for scuba diving and snorkelling, with some of Australia’s best dive sites, including the rusted wreck of the HMCS Protector. The waters are teeming with marine life as the reef supports about 900 of the 1500 fish species and over 70% of the coral species that are found on the Great Barrier Reef. The University of Queensland has a Research Station on Heron Island which is one of the world’s principal coral reef ecology research stations.

You can enjoy reef-walking hand-in-hand, viewing the magnificent underwater life of fish and corals from the coral submarine, and can sit on the dunes watching the sun set over the ocean. After a day of exploring you can pay a visit to the Aqua Soul Spa to relax and rejuvenate, where the treatments are designed to embrace the healing qualities of the sea and earth. Another romantic activity ideal for honeymooners is a sunset wine and cheese cruise, where you can watch the sunset while indulging in a range of quality Australian wine and cheeses.

Don’t forget to take your camera, as you will see many things at Heron Island that you will want to photograph, and will remember for a lifetime.
