Wedding Bouquet Styles

Choosing a wedding bouquet is a lot more difficult than deciding what flowers you want, as they come in a variety of styles which can flatter or detract from an outfit. There are differences in the shapes of the bouquets as well as how tightly packed they are and how much foliage they contain.

If you have a petite figure you need a smaller bouquet, and if you have a fuller figure with broad hips then a longer but slender bouquet can be most flattering. A wedding dress with a full skirt can look great with a large, round bouquet while a tailored outfit suits a streamlined bouquet.

Formal posy

This is a precisely arranged traditional style which is round in shape and uses round flowers of the same size. The stems are either wired and covered with ribbon to form a handle, or they are exposed and tied with ribbon. The type of flower will also influence the look of the posy.

Informal posy

This is usually roundish in shape, with a less structured appearance than a formal posy. It tends to have a less uniform choice of flowers and more foliage. The stems can be covered or wired like a formal posy, and it has a more garden or country feel.

Natural stem bouquet

This is also known as a hand-tied bouquet. The stems of this bouquet are longer and are a visible feature of the design. It is generally not wired, and is considered suitable for less formal weddings.

Sheaf-style bouquet

Also called an arm bouquet, this bouquet lies along the bride’s forearm or hangs from her hand. It can either be long and narrow in shape with neat blooms, or wider with a softer form.

Trailing bouquet

A trailing bouquet is a cascade of flowers that can be narrow and long or short and wide, depending on your style of outfit. A trailing bouquet can either have a posy at the top or just have the trail of flowers. If you want to throw your bouquet at the reception make sure you order one with a detachable posy at the top.
