2008 Wedding Dress Trends

The traditional white gown is still the most popular choice for weddings but 2008’s major fashion trend has been a move to colours other than white. Popular shades are blue, pink, cappuccino and champagne, and also pale golds, mauves and silvery-grey. The Paris fashion show featured many black bridal gowns, although they are yet to take off in Australia.

For brides who like the traditional white, you can choose to accentuate your white gown with your favorite color. This can take the form of a sash, belt or ribbon, but take care that fabrics and patterns do not clash. Oversized bows and flower accents are also in, and these provide the perfect way for brides to personalize their wedding gown with colours that reflect their character. A very popular choice is the white gown with a large black sash style ribbon tied around the waist with a bow at one side. This can look stunning provided you don’t go overboard, and it is done in good taste.

Modern brides are choosing wedding gowns that reflect their personality and vision which reflects an overall trend of breaking away from rules and tradition. It is important that you choose a style that suits you – if this means wearing a black wedding dress, or a trouser suit then feel free to do it! Even if you are traditional at heart and have always pictured yourself as a wedding princess in white satin, you needn’t worry about being perceived as old fashioned. The most important thing in choosing a wedding dress style is to pick something that makes you feel comfortable and beautiful on what is going to be your special day.

Although certain traditional dress styles are always popular, bridal fashion does follow mainstream fashion to some extent. This means if you fancy something different and modern you should get your inspiration from the catwalks. Currently there is a return to more feminine details on dresses such as frills, ruffles, bows, flowers and ribbons. You can always add the latest accessories such as hanging earrings to your wedding wear. Don’t try and look too trendy though, as many fashions date quickly and you may want to display your wedding photographs for many years.
