The best man is usually the groom’s best friend or relative. Traditionally, the best man is single but today it is quite common for him to be married as people now get married later in life. The best man is essentially someone who will assist the groom in the planning preparation and running of the wedding, so the choice is critical. Common duties include organising the bucks’ night, hiring the suits for the men in the wedding party, giving a speech at the reception and providing moral support to the groom. Ideally you need someone who is reliable, doesn’t panic in a crisis, is organised and a good public speaker.
The responsibilities of the best man can include any of the following:
Before the wedding
Organising clothes hire for the groom and the groomsmen
Organising the bucks’ night and making sure the groom gets home safely
Helping out with arrangements with the bride’s family
Taking part in a dress rehearsal
Helping organise any ushers for the ceremony
On the wedding day
Helping the groom get ready
Getting the groom to the wedding on time
Confirming transport arrangements for the ceremony and reception
Arrange for the honeymoon luggage to be taken to the reception venue
Arranging transport to the honeymoon
Making sure the groomsmen are correctly attired
Checking the buttonholes
Checking ushers know what to do
Looking after the wedding ring(s) until needed during the ceremony
Signing as witness to the wedding register and marriage certificate
Arranging payment of the ceremony venue expenses and minister or celebrant fees on behalf of the groom
Partnering the chief bridesmaid to the signing of the register and when leaving the ceremony venue
Take part in the formal photography session
At the reception
Partner the chief bridemaid when arriving at the reception
Arrange for the honeymoon luggage to be placed in the couple’s going-away vehicle
Ensure that any wedding presents brought to the reception are safely stored or taken away afterwards
Give a quality speech
Propose a toast
Act as MC if no one else is fulfilling that role
After the wedding
Look after the groom’s wedding clothes and returning any hired items.
Being a best man is one of the best things a man can do for a good friend.
