Tips for Outdoor Weddings
Island Honeymoon destinations >>
Many couples do not want to have a formal traditional church wedding, and prefer to be wedded outdoors in a more natural environment. Outdoor weddings can be held in a variety of places such as the Botanic Gardens, beaches, university grounds, on the waterfront, at a winery, on a cruise, in the country or outback, or even in your own (or your parents’) back garden.
You can choose somewhere that is special to you, or somewhere that you regard as a beautiful location. Whichever it is, here are twelve important tips to remember when planning an outdoor ceremony
• Make sure you have contingency plans if the weather is bad. You can hire marquees or canvas canopies to make life more comfortable if it rains or is very hot. Alternatively, there may be a nearby balcony or pavilion that can be used as a back-up venue.
• Check if there are any restrictions on marquees or music with the local council.
• Make sure you book the location if it is a public place, as you don't want to have to share it with another event.
• Ensure there is adequate parking near the venue.
• Don't chose a location that requires a long walk as elderly guests and people wearing high heels will find it difficult.
• Consider seating for elderly or pregnant guests.
• Make sure there are bathroom facilities nearby.
• Provide a map, or directions to the location, so guests can find it easily. If it is difficult to find, delegate younger relatives to stand along the way and help guide guests.
• Wear flat shoes or hire a carpet so your heels don’t sink into the sand or grass.
• If you have a large number of guests, consider hiring a portable PA system so they can hear your vows.
• Ask guests not to throw any type of confetti unless it’s allowed at the venue. Rose petals can spread disease to other plants and confetti is considered litter. Suggest alternatives like bubble blowing.
• Ensure you allow enough time for setting up and packing away.
Most of all make sure you enjoy your special day. Keep your sense of humour and don’t get upset by curious birdlife, wildlife and strangers watching if the ceremony is in a public space. These will become treasured memories.
